well pine a bidding strat was proposed, however what you seem to be proposing would not really work, since i dont know if we can alter contracts in Fantrax as well as bidding salaries becomes a nightmare to keep track of for other players. Also without hard bidding rules you get one ups as well as waiting till last minutes allowed anyways (i have seen it before in Sim leagues) I created some rules in those leagues that prevented both but i dont think we need hard rules for a headache.
My bidding proposal was to bid picks.

Not all bidding of picks would make sense either since it would really mess with the 2012 draft with tons of holes potentially. also not every team's 1st is as expendable as some. some teams could care less about picks while some it is a necessary piece so to require that people would give up picks in order for to get a FA seems pretty unfair to me.

Really the problem is there is no "fair" way to make the determination who should get to pick him.
Perhaps a lottery type system for all interested in him, every one who wants him gets one ticket thrown in the hat and the name that gets drawn wins.
You could even expand it to allow people to purchase "extra" tickets with their draft picks.

again I think any type of auctioning or bidding with draft picks is unfair as not all picks are the same or nearly the same value to everyone. Although I would like the extra tickets better than the outright buying through picks of a FA

What if we just enact a waiver system starting after the draft?
Yeah, lots of teams will be disappointed but it's only fair to give the last place team the best FA out there.

Holes in a draft arent rfeally an issue since all that does is make the draft deeper for us. and whats the issue with some people valuing their picks more than others? basically you are trading your picks for jagr, but instead of trading to someone else you are trading to oblivion.
Another reason i like it is it discourages people from getting him just to flip him. People that actually want him on their team will offer the most. With fake tickets or other systems chances are much higher a person will bid just to get trade bait. I am not going to offer my first rounder for a FA i think i can trade for a 2nd or lower, but 30 "tokens"? why not. I personally wouldnt but i have seen it done in sim leagues.

yeah draft picks going into oblivion kind of makes the draft messy as #47 or what could be #45 or something more screwy. I also don't really care if people want to flip him or not I don't see how that matters because some people's firsts are more expendable and some aren't. So the idea is everyone's 1sts or whatever round picks are the same? because they're not. Thus making it easier for someone to give up a 1st when say if you won or came in 2nd hey their 1st is alot easier for you to part with (assuming you end up similarly next year) than a team trying to build. In the end though for the tokens or whatever the picks would be treated the same. I think this illustrates how token system grossly favors teams that project to finish highly by costing them less to get a good player they want and also that this would really complicate the draft. Also since we are trying to model the NHL how can we justify sending draft picks into oblivion for multiple FAs? The Devils lost picks but that was because of cap circumvention but if this was the way we all had to get FAs I think some teams wouldn't be able to sign many FAs that are worth much. overall a disaster for parity. The teams that are good do not need help to win, by virtue of them winning it is proven. Why should we make it easier for them to do it again. I feel we should try to encourage competition amongst all if we can not do it in a completely impartial way.
