Are we allowed to place claims on waived player s No. Because we are still in the roster addition freeze until Free Agency reopens on August 25th, No claims are being processed. Thus, players dropped during the off-season automatically become free agents and may be claimed when free agency reopens.

ah thought the off season drop rule was for players who signed new contracts which gm's did not want to honor so they can then release them.
so we can drop players for any reason now?

ah thought the off season drop rule was for players who signed new contracts which gm's did not want to honor so they can then release them. so we can drop players for any reason now? The off-season drop rule IS only for players with new NHL contracts. That said, Pettersson is fine to drop since he is a prospect anyway. Clarification: Actually, anyone is fine to drop, though it would be prejudicial to drop an NHL player during the roster freeze ... since players automatically become FA when dropped during the roster freeze, you would be on the hook for half of his salary. If you were to wait until after the roster freeze, at least there would be the chance that someone claims him on waivers at full salary, leaving you on the hook for nothing.

Droping an NHL player with a pre-existing contract would make that GM liable for half of that salary. Therefore, it makes sense for all GMs to apply caution if dropping them during the off-season.

cool
iirc Pettersson was the first player ever signed via FA in DTDL, and now is the first player officialy dropped in this off-season. Well, congrats to Fredrik on that honor
