I vote we mimic the nhl on this one. It's still 8 from each conference I'm pretty sure, and I think we should do the same.

The only reason the NHL allows for the disparity between East and West, from what I have read, is that since the Eastern teams have such easier road travel, this advantage of having a better percentage of making the play-offs in the West is a trade off. We don't have the same issue.

I agree with Zaph: the final 4 spots in our playoffs go to the highest ranking runner up teams.

We don't have the same issue. With fewer teams in the West it makes more sense, but if it were even I would definitely say to keep to 8 from each conference. To me, it's better to have a competition for the final berth between conference rivals. Being Tampa, to battle Buffalo, Minnesota, and Anaheim for a playoff spot seems so random and not exciting. I understand the team names are just random - but it just feels right to have the Flyers and Penguins battle out for a playoff spot, and not the Flyers and Canucks. Then in the playoffs, if 10 from the East make it and 6 from the West, there will be teams from the East in the Western bracket? Idk how it works, but that sounds so wrong lol. We might as well get rid of conferences and divisions all together in our league and make randomized conferences and divisions with more even numbers. Maybe you guys don't look at anyone in the league as a 'division rival' - but I do and it adds value to the league imo. I think that's one of the most important reasons for having NHL team names as our names and not "Y'all Mother Puckers" and non-sense like that.

interesting and valid points, Chris. rivals are such an abstract concept, though. It works in the NHL for real fans. I feel a rivalry with certain GMs in this league, not because of their fictional teams fictional city.
we do have a H2H format based upon...well I don't actually know how fantrax decides how our schedule is weighted. how it decides what teams we play over the year because we don't have an 82 game season.
but with H2H rivalry is important and we can hope the NHL looks to expand sooner than later to even out the conferences but I know I am going to be pissed if my team misses the play-offs but a Western team who is 10 or 15 points behind me gets in.
that just puts an unfair advantage on that conference. Not only that but I also don't get any sort of draft pick advantage for not missing the play-offs since draft positioning is based on reversal of the final regular season standings alone so I so I finish 12th in the league but 9th in my conference. I still only get the #18 pick in the entry draft even though the guy with the #14 pick gets a shot at the "Stanley Cup" and with the how random the play-off format is, he might just win it.

that is sort of a mess, apologies. I'd rather see a Vancouver vs San Jose final than miss the play-offs because of an abstract concept like rivals or fictional concept such as geography.
just my two cents (and two cups of coffee)

I find this compelling (and not hard to follow, FWIW). I also support allotting the last four playoff positions based on regular season performance, irrespective of the conference in which those teams happen to play.

So is there a potential poll question in here somewhere?

So is there a potential poll question in here somewhere? I suppose that is up to you, coach.
