First, good luck to everyone this season! Great to have hockey back.
Now, per the Roster Violations thread, there are a couple of issues pertaining to league activity that I'd like to get a discussion going about.
What I propose is a new contact system for the league. There should be a new thread, even a entire forum section just for this one post, that lists all 30 gm's and their preferred method of contact.
The goal is to have a more active league. My idea of an 'active enough league' is one where any manager can contact another manager and get a response in a relatively normal time frame.
Only 15 of us routinely log on here, and as I mentioned in the other thread, there's only about 8 of you I've ever traded with. I had Paajarvi, dealt him, got him back, and dealt him again within the past year. It'd be nice to crack open the other 75% of the player pool.
For example, in this new contact thread, it would list Tampa Bay, preferred method of contact: PM on proboards or email (and then list my email). Buffalo - email. New Jersey - PM or whatever he wants.
This way, those who never check proboards for their pm's can be contacted regarding a trade or an issue or a whatever. They don't even have to propose a trade to anyone in the next 5 years, but everyone should be available to respond to an inquiry within...idk...48 hours.
If someone is not willing to check proboards or answer emails or whatever their preferred method of contact is, they should not be in the league. If setting your lineup on fantrax is all you do in this league, it is not enough. It is enough for a 10 team yahoo league with random strangers, but it is not enough for this league. This is my opinion, and you may disagree.
People are busy, and most people in this league are 30+ years old with families and hectic lives. A trade inquiry will get glossed over every now and then, and that's fine. You don't have to post on proboards all the time and be active in forum discussions regarding a waiver claim. BUT, any one of the 30 managers should be able to contact any one of the other 29 managers and get a response within a timely manner. Is that too much to ask for? And I think we can accomplish this very quickly.
One of my reasons for posting this is that we have 25 or so managers now, who all said they were in for this season. 10 of them aren't checking proboards already and don't even know their rosters are in violation. But if there's a way to keep them as valuable members of this league, we should explore it. This system will create more contact between managers, and as a side suggestion, the commissioner or delegated "contact people who need to be contacted" person, which I now volunteer for, can notify a manager who is in violation, needs to vote on something, etc. If 6 teams need to be notified about roster issues, I will contact them by their preferred method of contact. Simple, easy, yet as far as I know we rarely do this unless it's very important.
It's been said before that checking ProBoards is mandatory for this league. In a perfect world, that'd be great. But it's hard enough to get managers, so I say let's start small and try to go from 15 active managers to 25 just by increasing the amount of communication channels and the amount of communication in general.
