The plan to mimic the NHL's format is spot on, it's what we do at ZFHL but a caveat is if the NHL does expand for 2017/2018 then to mimic the draft lottery we may need to discuss expansion.

Not necessarily. just matchup: 31st with 30th 30th with 29th 29th with 28th 28th with 27th 27th with 26th 26th with 25th 25th with 24th 24th with 23rd 23rd with 22nd 22nd with 21st 21st with 20th 20th with 19th 19th wtih 18th 18th/17th with 17th (rewards teams for trying to win in that last couple of weeks even if they're eliminated. Anti tanking)

Can we look at dealing with some of the above issues after the draft is done?

Lets get this draft lottery implemented before start of season. Does anyone see anything negative about doing this?

Lets get this draft lottery implemented before start of season. Does anyone see anything negative about doing this? From reading this thread it appears most if not all are in favor of a draft lottery. I will toss my vote in here as well. Since this is a democracy I would think a poll would need to be set up so a vote can show that a majority feel one way or another and then a motion to implement can be passed. I am all for any move that simulates the real NHL so looking at expansion and/or a slight tweaking of team rosters is definitely something to look at. Start a poll for anything that might make the league better and has merit. This way everyone has a chance to have their say. If we go that route using the NHL's expansion guidelines would be the way to go likely, minus the clauses that don't really pertain to us. One barrier to expansion would be the need to fill the vacant teams first and I know from experience that recruiting committed GM's can be a difficult thing. The trend nowadays seems to be for people to want to join new startup leagues so they can have the enjoyment of drafting their own teams. First question a potential new GM always asks is what does the team look like? People don't it seems want to take over a bad team whereas I've always felt that to be more fun and challenging. Taking over a championship team that is nothing more than plug and play is kind of boring IMO. That being said finding GM's is a tough chore and is in part the reason I came back after thinking about it for awhile. I had received an email as a reminder that the draft was approaching and when I finally saw it and checked in here I noticed the amount of vacant teams and it bummed me out a little. I likely won't be able to be as active as I've been in the past in any league but unless I'm dead I'll be making sure to adjust my lineup in fantrax each day, something that only takes a couple minutes at best to ensure that my teams record is a true representation of the team I have and not as a result of neglecting to do anything. I'll be the first to say that real life trumps fantasy and people have lives and can't sit in front of their computers all day or spend all their time on this but if we are in the unfortunate position of starting the season with vacant teams maybe depending on how many there are a mod/admin can be assigned to each team to ensure lineups are adjusted daily in Fantrax. No trading or anything obviously, just ensuring that the best possible lineup is active each day. Maybe as well assigning a mod/admin each a division to oversee to ensure teams are cap/roster compliant and setting their lineups regularly. Lastly, though it was done it seems in relation to the draft I would have one last check in for all GM's before the season starts to get an exact number of who is and who isn't around. Sorry for such a brief post with lack of detail in it.

I agree with Montreal's comments above. Hopefully we can find new dedicated owners for the vacant teams before the season starts. As well as not lose any others owners before then. We seem to have a good strong group here.

I don't think we should look at adding an expansion team until such time as we have all existing teams looked after. History will show that leagues tend to lose GM's every year for various reasons...if we get thru this season intact then we might look to add on...just MHO

filling the teams prior to the draft would have been a lot easier. I had luck filling teams from lastwordonsports.com forums, hfboards.com and dobbers.

I agree with the draft lottery mimicking the real NHL also. I think as far as expansion goes we definately have to get the vacant teams filled with available GM's before adding another headache to the mix.
