How would we go about putting a motion to do a draft lottery that mirrors the NHL draft Lottery. Could we do some kind of vote. This could help reduce some tanking issues as we basically guarantee last place the first overall pick each year right now. The team that would have been matched up with Wpg Jets would also be the big winners this year. It would be easy to implement as we just match our standings to the final NHL standings. This should be the time of year to vote on this thing for next year. What are peoples thoughts on this.

I've been pushing for this for a few years now, along with a minimum games played for the entire season. if your team doesn't reach X games played, your 1st round pick slides 5 spots. or whatever numbers you want to use.
teams that are willfully not improving their team so they can have higher draft picks is part of the cause for a lack of movement in this league right now.
I'd also suggest we should be discussing the possibility of NHL expansion and what to do about that.

#1 need to start the process in motion, just makes sense to do the draft lottery - will cover a few tanking issues, at least finishing last won't guarantee first pick, and others can move up down in the draft. This will mirror the Nhl.
#2 Picking a minimum # of games is hard to decide the level, then what happens when a team reaches the minimum level then tanks. I think the teams should police themselves on this issue to make sure teams are starting active rosters.
#3 Regarding NHL expansion, we should look at doing what the NHL does - whatever rules they decide then we should use on number of protections
#4 Related to lack of movement, maybe we should do a regular season playoff for the top 16 teams the last 4-5 weeks of season. Just like the NHL teams may make moves if they think they have a chance to win addition draft picks. If you are close to playoffs might be worth making some moves, just like NHL, then we would need a trade deadline. Give out some Bonus draft picks to say the final 4 or 8 teams i.e finalists get picks added to round 1, semi finalists get mid 2nd rounders added, and losers in quarters get additional pick end of second round. JUST a thought.
Any others have thoughts?

#2 Policing hasn't worked and puts too much onus/pressure on Admins to do it. pick a competitive, yet fair minumum games played requirement and simplify the process unless you are offering to do it.

I support these ideas. Draft lottery, minimum games played and expansion rules mirroring NHL. More life like the better.

What if a team gets decimated with injuries?

What if a team gets decimated with injuries? that is what IR is for and if it means you have to make some tough decisions, that is fantasy hockey. 1 additional suggestion I would make is to return the our rosters to 12 forwards. 3 LW 3 RW 3 C 3 F or perhaps 2 LW 2 RW 2 C 4 F 2 Utility (F or D) 6 Dmen that would be a much bigger change.

wouldn't oppose an increase IR spots to 4/5 and set a minimum games for season.

How do we get these moving forward? #1 future draft lottery.
#2 deciding on a minimum # of games. Thinking 17 active spots, 26 weeks, multiply by 1.5 games per position per week = 663 games or 1.75 = 773.5 games or 2.0 = 884 What is a fair and equitable level? What happens when you don't meet minimums? Drop 3, 5, 7, 10 spots?

Easiest way to do a lottery is to match each team position here who missed playoffs to the real nhl draft lottery. Ie if the 30th, 27th, 25th place teams win lotteries for top 3 pick in NHL - the same positioned teams will win lottery here and pick top 3.

I don't mind Penguin's recommendation above (which I think was magicstew's originally) - it's simple and mimic's the real NHL. I'm for any rule changes that make our league closer to the real NHL.
