My 2 cents or maybe a whole nickels worth while I still have a pulse.
In a league of 30 teams it will always be difficult to have 30 owners active every single day. I'll be the first one on the real life trumps fantasy bandwagon. At the same time if you take on the commitment to run a team you should want to try and make an effort and in a daily change league really 5 minutes is probably adequate on a daily basis and really maybe 15 or 20 to set your roster for the whole week, unless you choose to make other moves.
I don't think the roster sizes are egregious at all. We have one less in total on our main rosters than real nhl teams do. and at 25 in the minors that is barely over the size of an ahl team caries and actually less. It's a bit disingenuous and a cop out of sorts for the teams saying there is no one to pick from in the minors. I could easily double my minor league team and have players that I feel comfortable might at some point do something at the nhl level whether they be full fledged rookies or minor leaguers. At 25 we are forced to make decisions on who to keep or who to trade. And therein lies another point for those teams who feel they can't compete. The trade market is there and in my time this league has seemed fairly active in that respect.
You have to spend money to make money. If your team isn't competitive you have to try and make moves to make it so. In the old days when a lot of you were tadpoles teams in fantasy tried to win. Now many actively try to lose because they are excited and have this need almost like a drug addiction to get their hands on the rookie du jour in the draft. That is also an issue. Too many times I've seen people join a league so they can get in on a draft and then they just disappear.
When I took over Montreal prior to last season I didn't check the thread and couldn't see fantrax to see what the roster looked like-I just wanted to be the MOntreal canadiens. Outside of a couple players the team was pretty bad and well under the cap. I hate being a team at the bottom of the standings regardless of what the benefit might be so I made moves and sacrifices to try to make a decent team.
Injuries stymied me last season and in the off season I paid a hefty price to acquire some players this off season but I also landed a Ryan Dzingel for practically nothing and while Louis Domingue has been nothing special this season I did in fact get him last season for absolutely nothing. I am doing considerable better this season but while I was in the hospital the last couple weeks or so my team struggled because I was putting no time in whatsoever.
I agree in an sense that maybe more IR slots may be required as the NHL really has no limit but if those slots on teams are filled with active players or prospects then those who are claiming the player pool is shallow will complain some more. A deeper draft might allow for more flexibility in trades since it's hard sometimes to pay a 3rd round price for even some active NHL'ers. Again though for those concerned with the player pool it would take a hit. Again I think that excuse is a cop out.
I hate hate hate 12 team leagues where every team is an all star team and you can go free agency and replace an injured 30 goal scorer with another one.
Made it as short as I could Zaphod.
